Shopping: A good reason to double dip

Jane Black - May 04, 2010

Most pre-packaged dips are simply functional: the safe thing to bring to a party or something to stave off hunger till dinner.Cava Mezze's line of satisfying and full-flavored Mediterranean spreads remind us why dips became so popular in the first place.

Created by the folks behind Cava, Mediterranean restaurant, Cava Mezze came on the market in November 2008. Like the restaurants – there is now one in Rockville and one on Capitol Hill, they developed an instant following. The dips are now sold in 25 stores, including 17 area Whole Foods Markets.

The tzatziki was my first discovery. It is thick and creamy, with a subtle yet persistent undercurrent of garlic. The eggplant and roasted pepper dip tastes just like what it is: fresh, blended vegetables. The harissa is smoky and sweet, with a gorgeous heat that surrounds the inside of your mouth and lingers. The Crazy Feta, barrel-aged sheep's-milk cheese mixed with olive oil and a pinch of jalapeño pepper, will be the first to disappear from your appetizer table.

Prices vary by location. Dips range from $3.49 to $9.99.
